16/2 fire alarm cable refers to a specific type of fire alarm cable comprising two conductors with a gauge of 16 AWG. It is usually used to connect components such as smoke detectors, heat detectors, control panels, strobe lights, and sirens, which are essential for detecting and alerting occupants in case of a fire or emergency. 16-2 fire alarm wire is normally made of copper with LSZH or PVC sheath, shielded with aluminum foil. Compared to 14/2 fire alarm cable, 16 alarm wire is more flexible and easier to work with in tight spaces. The most commonly used type is 16 2 fplp cable and 16/2 mc fire alarm cable.

FAQ

It is available in both versions. Unshielded is standard for notification appliances (horns/strobes). Shielded (with an aluminum foil and drain wire) is used for addressable loops or environments with high EMI/RFI interference to protect data signals.
This depends on the total current draw of the devices and the allowable voltage drop (usually max 3V or 10%). However, 16 AWG generally allows for runs 30-40% longer than 18 AWG for the same load.
Yes, reputable 16/2 cable should be UL Listed and comply with NEC Article 760 (National Electrical Code) for Power-Limited Fire Alarm Circuits.
