In a free-air environment at 20°C, 1 Gauge copper cable is typically rated for 130A to 150A continuous current. For short bursts (like engine starting), it can handle significantly higher loads depending on the insulation temperature rating (e.g., 105°C).
For continuous loads, it is recommended for up to 1500W - 1800W in 12V systems to maintain a safe voltage drop (<3%). For 2000W+ inverters, upgrading to 1/0 AWG is often advised.
1/0 AWG (One-Ought) is larger than 1 AWG. 1/0 AWG has a cross-section of ~53.5 mm², whereas 1 AWG is ~42.4 mm². 1/0 is capable of carrying approximately 20-30A more current.
