Car batteries provide a constant supply of electricity to our vehicles. The electronic components function properly with it while the car runs safely and smoothly. However, improperly installed battery cables can permanently damage the battery or cause personal injury. When dealing with the battery cables connected to it, we must pay careful attention to the order of installation.

Always remember to disconnect and reconnect the terminals connecting them in the correct order below:

Connecting the Battery:

  • Positive Terminal First.

It should be noted that the positive terminal marking is usually indicated by a plus sign (+) and the negative terminal marking is indicated by a minus sign (-).

Care needs to be taken to securely attach the positive clamp of the jumper cable to the positive side of the discharged battery. Next, properly connect the negative clamp of the jumper cable to the negative terminal of the battery being operated. During operation, it is important to keep that all batteries are properly secured in place to avoid any improper connections that could result in damage to the batteries.

Disconnecting the Battery:

  • Negative Terminal First.

Follow the detailed steps: We can use a socket wrench to loosen the nut on the negative battery terminal and remove it from the battery post. Also, set the cables aside – away from the battery terminals. Finally just repeat the above steps for the positive battery cable.

But why the negative terminal is connected first?

Once the positive terminal is disconnected first, the wrench used to remove the positive cable may accidentally come into contact with a metal surface of the body. It could cause a severe short circuit.

Therefore, the order in which the connections are made is closely related to the issue of safety when carrying out the operation. We need to carefully check that the cables are intact and the connections are firm and reliable to avoid potential electrical faults or short circuits due to improper wiring.
