MC-HL (Metal-Clad, Hazardous Location) cable is a high-performance armoured electrical cable engineered for safety and reliability in Class I, Division 1 hazardous locations where flammable gases, vapors, or liquids are present. Its construction features insulated copper conductors encased within a gas- and vapor-tight, continuously corrugated welded aluminum armor, which is then protected by a durable outer jacket. This cable is typically installed in industrial settings like petrochemical plants, refineries, and offshore platforms, where it supports power and control circuits in cable trays, conduits, direct burial, or aerial configurations.

  • The continuous jacket provides an airtight barrier and offers excellent crush and impact resistance. The internal conductors remain intact even when subjected to severe mechanical damage.
  • Variable frequency drives (VFDs) generate a significant amount of electrical noise, which radiates from power cables and can interfere with sensitive instruments and control networks. The continuous welded aluminum jacket of MC-HL cables serves as an effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) shield.
  • Compared to traditional conduit installation methods, MC-HL cable installation costs can be reduced by up to 70%.
  • Moisture-resistant; resistant to various industrial chemicals; corrosion-resistant
  • The wiring flexibility of MC-HL cable far exceeds that of rigid conduits. MC-HL cable allows for unlimited bending in continuous wiring.

FAQ

The armor integrity. Standard MC uses interlocking tape (not gas-tight). MC-HL uses a solid welded tube. This creates a gas/vapor-tight barrier that prevents flammable gases from flowing through the cable, a mandatory requirement for high-risk zones (refineries, offshore rigs).
MC-HL is considered a self-contained conduit system. Its rugged CCW armor provides the mechanical protection of a pipe. Installing MC-HL in cable trays instead of rigid conduit typically results in 30-50% labor savings due to easier routing and fewer fittings.
You must use explosion-proof TMC or TMCX glands. These connectors are specifically engineered to seal around the corrugated armor and the inner bedding, ensuring the explosion-proof rating of the enclosure is maintained and providing a proper ground bond.
